Davol first announced a Kugel mesh patch recall in 2005 after it was discovered that the “memory recoil ring”, which opens the patch after it is implanted, can break under the stress of placement in the intra-abdominal space. Tests run by Davol in 2005 confirmed that a failure at the ring weld was causing the mesh patch ring failure. The hernia patch recall was later expanded to include additional product codes and lot numbers. The hard plastic memory ring can form a sharp edge which can puncture internal organs causing serious injuries including:
· bowel perforation
· bowel obstruction
· chronic intestinal fistulae
· serious infections
In January 2007, the manufacturer of the Kugel Patch expanded the recall of the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch. The FDA expanded list below details the recalled product codes and lot number.
