The Bard Composix Kugel Hernia Patch is used to repair ventral hernias. This mesh
hernia repair patch was developed by Dr. Robert Kugel. It consists of a bilayer polypropylene patch with a self-retaining outer memory recoil ring. The patches are used for hernia repair caused by thinning or stretching of scar tissue that forms after hernia surgery. The Kugel hernia patch is manufactured by Davol, Inc. which is headquartered in Rhode Island. Davol is a subsidiary of Bard, Inc. which is located in New Jersey. According to Davol, there have been over 78,000 Kugel hernia patches distributed.
The Kugel repair technique involves making a small incision (3cm – 4cm) and creating a pocket in the preperitoneal space. The Kugel mesh patch is then placed inside the abdominal cavity behind the hernia through the incision. The patch is held open by the plastic memory recoil ring that allows the patch to be folded during insertion and later spring open and lay flat after it is properly in place.
What is a hernia?
A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ bulges through a weak area of muscle. Most hernias occur in the abdomen. There are several different kinds of hernias:
· Inguinal – the most common type which occurs in the groin
· Umbilical – around the belly button
· Incisional – through a scar
· Hiatal – a small opening in the diaphragm that allows the upper part of the stomach to move up into the chest
· Congenital diaphragmatic – a birth defect that requires surgery
The Kugel mesh hernia repair patch was designed for use in open ventral hernia repair in order to help eliminate the tension and strain on surrounding muscles and ligaments thereby reducing discomfort after surgery. It is specifically for repairing the abdominal wall by reinforcing the weak tissue around the hernia. According to the Davol, the Kugel Patch manufacturer, the procedure takes an average of 1 to 2 hours to complete under general anesthesia.
